'host' -- faux fur, polyester resin, silicone nipples, vinyl tubes, satin, steel, glass, water, hydroxypropyl methylcellulose, organic cane sugar -- 128” x 15” x 23” __________________________________________________________________________________________________________ With its strange, phallic form and its slicked back hair, 'host' is a captive organism being harvested for its fluid. On each end of the creaturely form, a catheter is inserted into an orifice, oozing thick pearlescent fluid into a shallow glass basin. Using the silicone nipples attached to the pair of catheters, this fluid can be extracted through sucking and pumping. This provocative act is encouraged by the presence of satin kneelers and steel holders, as well as a pleated satin sleeve, which evokes the frivolous, yet functional paper manchettes that adorn crown roasts. Together, these elements infuse a sense of refinement and ritual, a balance between purity and profanity. 'host' questions the increasingly mechanized exploitation of nonhuman life that has transformed humans into parasites.
